Calderdale College’s Inspire Centre, working with the Funding Unit have successfully secured £4,000 worth of funding from Sport England’s small grants scheme. The funding has been awarded to aid the development of a Tennis programme which aims to increase participation in Tennis, offering a range of activities for students, staff and the local community.
Through partnerships with The Lawn Tennis Association and local clubs and organisations Calderdale College will be using the funding to focus on several key areas within Tennis. Firstly, students and specific classes will have the opportunity to drop into fun weekly sessions held in the Inspire Centre which will be delivered by Ellis Ward, an experienced and qualified coach.
These sessions are designed to introduce students to Indoor (short) tennis, providing them with a platform in which to develop and eventually join a club within the local community. The funding will help students fund their first few Tennis sessions within the local community, bridging the gap between College and community sport clubs.
In order to boost female participation in the local area Calderdale College will also be running a weekly Cardio Tennis class for women. This follows Sport England’s research into female motivations for taking part in sport along with our own research into the needs of the local community. We hope to see a range of female students, staff and members of the local community coming together and enjoying physical activity through Tennis.
Along with the many activities being held in the state of art facilities at the Inspire Centre, Calderdale College will also be hosting The Great British Tennis Weekend this June; the event will bring together people of all ages within the community through fun games, competitions, food, drink and much more. This will be fully supported by Tennis professionals and coaches who will be on hand to teach everyone from complete beginners to experienced players some essential Tennis skills.
